What is silica gel?
Silica gel is a desiccant: a material designed to pull moisture out of the air around it. Despite the name, it isn’t a wet gel. It’s a dry, glass-like form of silicon dioxide — the same basic compound found in sand — shaped into tiny porous beads.
Each bead is full of microscopic pores, giving it a huge internal surface area. Water molecules cling to that surface; silica gel doesn’t really absorb moisture so much as it adsorbs it — holding water on the outside of those pores like fog caught on glass.
That quiet chemistry is why a sachet smaller than a sugar packet can keep shoes, pills, seeds, electronics, and dried foods safer through storage and shipping.

The fashion industry alone ships hundreds of millions of silica gel packets every year, tucked into shoe boxes and handbag tissue to prevent mould during transit across oceans and humidity-fluctuating shipping containers.

Silica gel is one of the most reusable desiccants around. Bake the sachets at low heat for a couple of hours, and they’re restored and ready to go again. That little packet you threw away? It could’ve lasted decades.
There’s something almost poetic about an object designed to be invisible: it preserves other things without being noticed, yet everyone recognises the packet the moment it appears.
Next time you find one, maybe don’t throw it straight in the bin. Toss it in your wardrobe, your camera bag, or your toolbox. The thing it protects might surprise you.
