They’re so commonplace that they’ve become an invisible part of modern manufacturing.
But perhaps it’s time we started asking a simple question:
Do we really need as many silica gel packets as we use?
The answer isn’t always as straightforward as manufacturers would have us believe.
The Hidden Waste We Rarely Think About
Silica gel is exceptionally effective at absorbing moisture. That’s why it has become the default solution across countless industries—from pharmaceuticals to electronics, leather goods, food packaging, and photography equipment.
The problem isn’t that silica gel works.
Every year, billions of these packets are manufactured, inserted into products, and almost immediately thrown into landfill.
Unlike paper or many organic packaging materials, silica gel itself does not biodegrade in any meaningful timeframe. The silica beads are essentially a form of synthetic amorphous silicon dioxide that remains stable for extremely long periods. While often considered chemically inert and non-toxic, inert does not mean environmentally harmless, it simply means it persists.
One Product Can Contain Several Packets

While this may seem insignificant for one customer, multiply this practice across millions of products sold worldwide every year and the scale of unnecessary waste becomes staggering.
Each packet represents:
A paper or Tyvek outer wrapper
Plastic or synthetic sealing materials
Silica gel beads
Manufacturing energy
Transport emissions
Packaging labour
All for something that is usually discarded within minutes of opening the box.
“But Silica Gel Isn’t Plastic…”
That’s true.
Silica gel isn’t plastic, and it isn’t considered hazardous waste.
However, environmental sustainability isn’t simply about toxicity.
It’s about resource efficiency.
Manufacturing something designed for a single use that lasts effectively forever after disposal should make us pause—especially when billions of units are involved.
Disposable products don’t have to be toxic to create long-term environmental burdens.
Are Manufacturers Being Overly Cautious?
Many companies include silica gel packets because they’ve always done it.
Risk management departments understandably want to avoid warranty claims caused by moisture damage. Adding another desiccant packet is inexpensive insurance.
But there is a point where precaution becomes habit.
Questions worth asking include:
Is the packaging already moisture resistant?
Is the product being shipped in climate-controlled logistics?
Could a resealable moisture barrier eliminate the need?
Would one larger desiccant be more effective than several smaller ones?
Could reusable desiccant cartridges be supplied instead?
Ultimately, the question is, is there another option?
